Title

Watershed Processes in Subalpine Forest Ecosystems:

Overview of Hydrological, Biogeochemical, and Ecological Research

at the US Forest Service Fraser Experimental Forest

Course Description

US Forest Service Researchers at the Rocky Mountain Research Station will host a seminar series organized to commemorate the 70th anniversary of research at the Fraser Experimental Forest.  The experimental forest was established in 1937 as a long-term research site to address questions regarding the influence of forest management on hydrologic processes in subalpine forest ecosystems.  Paired watershed studies at Fraser have contributed greatly to our current knowledge of the controls on water yield and watershed biogeochemistry in snow-dominated catchments of the Rocky Mountain West.  Much remains unknown about how natural disturbance, climate variability and landscape patterns influence watershed processes.  Fraser’s current research builds on long-term hydrologic, climatic and biogeochemical records to assess the consequences of bark beetle outbreak on watershed conditions.

The series of lectures will highlight historic, on-going and planned research at and around FEF.  Participants will include federal agency (RMRS, USGS) and academic researchers (CSU, UW, CSM) and NFS managers.  Presentations will be 30-40 minutes, with 10 to 20 minutes for questions, discussion and feedback.

GDPE students will participate as invited lecturers and will contribute to post-seminar discussion sections.  Supplemental readings will be provided to complement lecture topics and to facilitate discussions.
